Plumber replacing a toilet fill valve in a Georgetown TX bathroom

Scope

Toilet repair in Georgetown, TX, plus faucets, sinks and disposals

The small jobs that waste water, wake you at night or make a kitchen unusable.

Most fixture problems come down to a handful of wearing parts. In a toilet tank that is the flapper, the fill valve and the flush valve seal. Under the tank it is the wax ring and closet bolts. A faucet relies on a cartridge or washers and O-rings, and every sink depends on the angle stops and supply lines beneath it.

We repair those parts when the fixture is worth keeping and replace the fixture when it is not. Bought your own toilet or faucet? We install that too.

  • Running, leaking, rocking or weak-flushing toilets, plus full toilet replacement
  • Dripping or stiff faucets: cartridges, washers, O-rings and aerators
  • New faucet and sink installs, including fixtures you supply
  • Garbage disposal repair and replacement
  • Seized or leaking shut-off valves and supply lines swapped for quarter-turn stops
  • Low flow at a single fixture traced to its cause

Symptoms

Why does a toilet keep running? Fixture failures we see most

Local water speeds up wear on the rubber and the seals that make fixtures shut off.

A toilet runs when water escapes the tank and the fill valve keeps topping it up. The usual leak is a flapper that no longer seals, often because mineral has roughened the seat it closes on. On water measured at up to about 19 grains per gallon, that crust forms faster than many owners expect.

Faucets suffer the same way. Scale stiffens cartridges and wears washers, so handles grind and spouts drip. Disposals have their own patterns: a hum means a jam, silence usually means the reset button tripped, and a leak from the body means the unit is finished.

Book a repair when you notice:

  • The toilet refills on its own every so often with nobody using it
  • A toilet rocks, or the floor at its base is soft or stained
  • A faucet drips after the handle is fully closed
  • Water under the kitchen sink after the disposal runs
  • Weak flow at one tap while the rest of the house is fine

The visit

What happens on a toilet or faucet repair call

Short visits, done in a set order so nothing gets missed.

  1. Tell us the fixture and the symptom

Running, leaking, clogged, rocking or dead? If you bought a replacement, have the box handy so we know what we are installing.

  2. Shut the water at the fixture

We close the angle stop. Older multi-turn stops often seize or weep once moved, and if one does, we replace it with a quarter-turn valve before going further.

  3. Find the actual failure

A few drops of dye in the tank show a silent flapper leak. We check the flush valve seat, fill height and overflow, rock the bowl to test the seal, and pull an aerator to look for scale.

  4. Repair the part or set the new fixture

Worn parts are swapped. A new toilet gets a fresh wax ring, new closet bolts and a new supply line, set level on the flange. Faucets go in with new supply connections.

  5. Test under real use

We flush repeatedly and check the base and tank bolts, run faucets hot and cold, and put a disposal under load with water running. Every joint is checked dry.

  6. Remove the old fixture and clean up

The old toilet, faucet or disposal leaves with us, and the bathroom or cabinet is left as we found it, minus the problem.

Cost

Repair or replace an old toilet? What shapes the cost

A flapper and a full toilet swap are very different jobs. These are the factors behind the quote.

Fixture repair and replacement cost factors
FactorEffect on the job
Part or whole fixtureA flapper, fill valve or cartridge is a short repair; a new toilet or faucet is an install.
Who supplies the fixtureYou can buy your own, or we can supply one; the labour is similar.
Flange and floorA broken flange or a soft subfloor under a leaking toilet adds repair work.
Shut-off valvesSeized or leaking stops are replaced before the fixture.
AccessUndermount sinks and tight vanities take longer than open cabinets.
Disposal setupMatching the existing mount and outlet keeps a swap simple.

Cracked porcelain, a toilet that clogs every week, or one that predates current flush standards all point to replacement. A sound toilet with a worn flapper does not need one. We quote on site and tell you which camp yours falls in.

Standards

Flush limits, shut-off valves and who may do the work

Federal water rules shape which toilets you can buy, and state rules shape who installs them.

Under the Energy Policy Act of 1992, new toilets are limited to 1.6 gallons per flush. EPA WaterSense notes that older toilets can use as much as 6, and its labelled models use 1.28 or less. That gap is the strongest argument for replacing a pre-1994 toilet rather than repairing it.

In Texas, plumbing is regulated by the State Board of Plumbing Examiners, and each plumbing company works under a Responsible Master Plumber. A like-for-like fixture swap is routine; moving drains or supply lines in a remodel is a bigger job, and we pull a permit when the scope requires one.

Why Alta Vista Plumbing

Why homes and rentals call us for fixture work

Small jobs get the same care as big ones, and our reviews show it.

Several reviewers had toilets bought at Lowe’s installed by our crews, including one where a second toilet arrived defective and was swapped and set later that day. Others had garbage disposals replaced along with a seized shut-off valve, and noted the clean cabinet afterwards.

When a small leak showed up under a sink after a faucet install, the customer called back and we fixed it and double-checked it. We have done this work since 1999 and hold a 4.7 average across 436 Google reviews. One toilet or a rental’s worth of faucets, the number is (512) 988-5119.

Both Nick and Zach were on time. The first toilet was installed perfectly, but the 2nd had a factory defect. They immediately went back to Lowe's, got a replacement and installed it later in the day as promised. An overall 'job well done' by both men. Highly recommended.

We greatly appreciate your review as well as your business! We'll be sure to relay this over to nick and Zack as well. Thank you Logan!

In July 2020, I was connected to Alta Vista via Lowe's who uses Handy to schedule their toilet install jobs. While I wasn't thrilled with Handy, Alta Vista was fantastic. They're a family-owned business, and owner Steve and his son completed my job. Because I paid for install via Lowe's I don't know what Alta Vista would have charged, but I would not hesitate to reach out to them for future plumbing needs. Update: Sept 2020, I have used them again to replace the garbage disposal, and have been very pleased with their service. June 2021 -- I have had Alta Vista out to flush my water heater, excellent service!

The team did an excellent job. They came in and quickly assessed the problem and replaced the garbage disposal. The team was kind, knowledgeable, and professional. After they quickly installed the new one they cleaned up their work area and gave me all the information needed. I would recommend this company.

After having a new faucet installed. I noticed a small leak in one of the pipes underneath kitchen sink. Reached back out to AVP and explained the situation. They set an appointment for Lydia to check it out and fix. I was pleased with Lydia’s help in getting the leak fixed and double checking that it was good to go. My first experience using AVP. Thank you Lydia!

FAQ

Toilet, faucet and disposal questions we answer most

Why does my toilet keep running?

Almost always because the flapper is not sealing or the fill valve is set too high and spilling into the overflow tube. Put food colouring in the tank and wait twenty minutes; colour in the bowl means a flapper leak. On local hard water, scale on the flapper seat is a common culprit, so we clean or replace the seat as well.

Repair or replace an old toilet?

Repair it if the porcelain is sound and it flushes well; a flapper or fill valve is a small job. Replace it if it is cracked, clogs often, or dates from before 1994. EPA WaterSense says older toilets can use as much as 6 gallons a flush, against 1.28 or less for labelled models, so the water savings add up fast.

Will you install a toilet or faucet I bought myself from a store?

Yes. Several of our Google reviewers bought toilets at Lowe’s and had our crews install them, and others supplied their own kitchen faucets. Check the box for the rough-in size, usually 12 inches from the wall to the bolts on a toilet, and keep the packaging until it is set. If a part is defective, we tell you before going further.

Why is pressure low at just one faucet?

Usually because the aerator is clogged. Hard water scale and bits of debris collect on the screen, and unscrewing and soaking it often fixes the problem. If not, the cartridge may be scaled, the angle stop may be partly closed, or a supply line may be kinked. If only the hot side is weak everywhere, the water heater is the suspect.

Should I repair or replace a garbage disposal?

Repair it if it hums or stops: that is usually a jam cleared with the hex key underneath, or a tripped reset button. Replace it if water leaks from the body, it grinds loudly, or it trips repeatedly. Leaks from the body mean the internal seal has failed. Reviewers have had disposals and the shut-off valve under the sink replaced together.
