The houses and the ground

Cast iron, galvanized pipe and the heaviest clay in the county

A railroad and cotton town whose oldest plumbing now shares the ground with brand-new pipe.

Taylor began in 1876, when the Texas Land Company auctioned lots ahead of the International-Great Northern rails. By the early 1900s it billed itself as the largest inland cotton market in the world, and many houses near downtown date from that boom.

Homes of that era were plumbed with cast-iron drains and galvanized steel supply lines. Galvanized pipe rusts from the inside, so weak pressure and brown water show up long before a leak does. Cast iron tends to crack along its bottom, where waste has sat for generations.

The ground adds strain. Much of eastern Williamson County is Houston Black clay, which USDA soil scientists describe as cracking up to four inches wide and a foot deep in dry spells. Those cracks stay open for 90 to 150 days in most years, and buried pipe moves with the soil.

Then there is the new work. Samsung announced its semiconductor plant here in November 2021, and new houses have followed. Builder-grade plumbing in those homes sits on the same clay as the century-old cottage down the street, so slab and yard-line leaks are not only an old-house problem.

Local knowledge

Downtown storefronts, Granger Lake water and city permits

Who supplies the water, who issues permits, and the jobs we see most.

The Taylor Downtown Historic District joined the National Register in 2005, covering roughly the blocks between 1st and 5th streets and Vance and Washburn. In commercial buildings of that age, one cast-iron stack often serves several rooms, so a slow drain upstairs can be a shared problem.

Tap water comes from Granger Lake, about seven miles north. The city once pumped well water, then shifted to treated surface water bought from the Brazos River Authority, which took over the treatment plant after a 2004 vote.

Permits go through the Development Services department and its online portal. When a water heater swap, repipe or gas line needs one, we pull it, and every trench starts with a Texas 811 locate two business days ahead. Most calls here are sewer backups, rusty supply lines and first water-heater replacements on the newer streets.

Services

Repipes, sewer laterals and clay-soil leak repairs

The work that comes up most in the old grid around Main Street and the newer streets on the edge of town.

Whole-House Repiping

Galvanized supply in pre-war houses narrows with rust until a shower barely runs. A repipe in PEX or copper replaces it room by room, with access holes patched and the permit handled.

Sewer Backup & Sewer Line Repair

Original cast-iron and clay laterals under the older blocks crack, sag and take in roots. A camera run shows whether a spot repair will hold or the line out to the city main needs replacing.

Slab Leak Detection & Repair

Houston Black clay heaves and shrinks under slab homes old and new. When a hot line under the floor fails, we pinpoint it and weigh a spot repair against rerouting the line overhead.

Drain & Sewer Cleaning

Century-old drains collect scale and grease that a store-bought auger cannot reach. We clear the main from the cleanout, then run a camera so you know whether the pipe itself is failing.

Water Heater Repair & Replacement

Tank heaters typically last about 10 to 15 years, so many in the 2000s subdivisions are due. We replace gas and electric units, add expansion tanks where needed and handle the city permit.

Main Water Line Repair & Replacement

Seasonal clay movement pulls at the yard line between meter and house. We trace the leak, request a Texas 811 locate and swap worn galvanized or brittle plastic pipe for a continuous run.

Commercial Plumbing

Historic storefronts downtown and the shops along US 79 need drain, fixture and water heater repairs that keep doors open. We plan the work around trading hours wherever the job allows it.

What customers say about sewer clogs and older-home remodels

I was in a panic. Our main sewer clogged up, meaning no water, toilet, nothing. I went to Whataburger to use their restroom. Lydia showed up within 10 minutes of her scheduled appoint, diagnosed the issue and fixed it. I am so happy to use my own plumbing. P.S. I thought the price was very fair.…

I found myself doing a total remodel on a property recently purchased. Alta Vista went above and beyond to bring my property up to code and added value to the property through doing the following: added an extra bathroom, rerouted water lines, add an outside faucet, added utility connections, assured the water pressure from the meter to the house was accurate and educated us in the drainage system. All the new lines are insulated and Steve Maldonado kept us updated and educated during the entire process. During their service of my property there was one small leak that they promptly fixed as soon as I called them! To this day I have asked them questions pertaining to the plumbing on the property and they respond fast! I highly recommend Alta Vista Services for ALL plumbing jobs. There is no job too big or too small that they can't do!

FAQ

Questions about galvanized pipe, black clay and new builds

Is galvanized pipe in an older Taylor house worth repairing, or should it be replaced?

Usually it should be replaced. Galvanized steel rusts from the inside, so one patched leak tends to be followed by the next joint. In downtown homes from the cotton-boom years, the supply pipe can be close to a century old. We check pressure and pipe condition, then quote a spot repair and a full repipe side by side so you can compare.

Does the black clay here really cause slab leaks?

Yes, it can. Houston Black clay swells after rain and shrinks in drought, and a slab rides on top of it. That movement stresses copper and plastic lines under the floor, especially at fittings. A warm spot on tile, a meter that moves with everything off or a sudden jump in the bill are the usual first signs. We confirm the leak before anyone breaks concrete.

Do you work on new homes built since the Samsung plant was announced?

Yes. Plenty of houses have gone up since Samsung announced its chip plant in November 2021, and builder-grade plumbing still needs service. Common calls are loose supply fittings, water heater faults, drains clogged with construction debris and leaks after the clay settles. New pipe under a slab can still shift as the soil dries out for the first time.
